Renault has reopened orders for the highly exclusive 5 Turbo 3E electric hot hatch in Australia, after the first 500 models sold out in just 48 hours.
The car, which takes inspiration from the 1980s Renault 5 Turbo, has been priced at a steep rate, making it one of the most expensive new models in the company’s history.
The 5 Turbo 3E is not just a tribute to a classic, but a modern interpretation, offering electrifying performance with a bespoke platform and unique design. This move signals Renault’s commitment to offering high-performance electric vehicles (EVs) for a select group of buyers.
According to Renault Australia, the second batch of 500 units became available for reservation on April 28, 2025, with the car expected to be delivered locally by 2027.
A new performance benchmark in the electric vehicle sector
The 5 Turbo 3E will be built on a custom platform, distinct from the regular Renault 5 E-Tech, which allows for substantial performance upgrades. Unlike other electric vehicles, the 5 Turbo 3E features in-wheel electric motors, offering a significant boost in power.
Renault claims the car can achieve up to 400 kW of power and 4,800 Nm of torque at the wheels, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of just 3.5 seconds.
The vehicle is also fitted with a 70 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing a driving range of up to 400 km under the WLTP cycle, as well as an impressive 350 kW DC fast-charging capability. In terms of design, the 5 Turbo 3E sports a more aggressive stance with wider dimensions compared to the standard Renault 5 E-Tech.
The exterior is styled with racing-inspired livery, and inside, it features bucket seats, a digital instrument cluster, and a rally-style handbrake—further emphasising its performance credentials.
Exclusivity and pricing set to redefine the market
Renault has set a lofty price for the 5 Turbo 3E, with global pricing pegged at €155,000 (approximately A$275,595), with a reservation fee of €50,000 (A$88,870). Given the addition of import duties, Goods and Services Tax (GST), and Luxury Car Tax (LCT) in Australia, the price is expected to exceed A$300,000.
This will position the 5 Turbo 3E as one of the most expensive vehicles in Renault’s history, surpassing the 2019 Megane R.S. Trophy-R.
Renault has also made clear that the car will be produced in a limited run of just 1980 units globally, commemorating the launch year of the original 5 Turbo. Once these vehicles are sold, no more will be produced, further increasing the exclusivity of the model.
