Australia is set to experience “pretty wild” weather in the coming days, with ski resorts bracing for blizzards that could halt ski lifts. At the same time, southeastern regions of the country are gearing up for a sharp drop in temperatures, some of the coldest so far this winter.

This sudden weather shift follows the arrival of a complex low-pressure system, which is expected to bring heavy rain, snow, and powerful winds to large parts of the country. These conditions will likely disrupt everyday life, particularly for those in the ski regions and urban areas used to milder temperatures.

Blizzards Hit Ski Resorts

Major ski resorts in New South Wales and Victoria are bracing for an intense few days. According to Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe, ski areas can expect between 30mm and 50mm of rain, followed by up to 60cm of snow in the coming days.

The weather is expected to be wild, with blizzards likely to disrupt operations at ski resorts, including the suspension of ski lifts. Sharpe noted that the weather will make it challenging for ski resorts to maintain operations, with strong winds forcing ski lifts to stop.

Despite the disruption, the fresh snow on the ground will create excellent skiing conditions by Thursday. While this may temporarily halt activities, the snow accumulation could offer a promising outlook for skiers in the longer term.

Bitter Cold Across Southeastern Australia

While ski resorts prepare for snow, much of southeastern Australia will experience a significant drop in temperatures. According to Sharpe, areas like Tumbarumba in New South Wales will see temperatures as low as -5°C on Friday, while Wangaratta in Victoria can expect a minimum of -2°C over the weekend.

This cold snap is not isolated to the ski regions. Major cities are also set to feel the chill. Sydney is expected to experience showers with lows dipping to 11°C, while Melbourne is forecast to see temperatures plummet from 12°C to 7°C between Tuesday and Wednesday

On Wednesday, the capital, Canberra, is expected to be one of the coldest locations in the country, with a maximum temperature of just 8°C.

The dramatic change in weather comes as a complex series of cold fronts move through the southeast, bringing what Sharpe described as “remarkable cold weather,” particularly to southern inland New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. These regions are set to experience some of the coldest temperatures of the year.
