A popular non-alcoholic grapefruit mixer sold nationwide has been urgently recalled due to a risk of bottle explosions caused by unintended fermentation inside the packaging.
The recall affects Salted Grapefruit by StrangeLove, which was sold in major supermarkets and liquor stores, including Coles, Woolworths, Dan Murphy’s, BWS, First Choice, Liquorland, and Vintage Cellars.
Bottles Could Explode Under Pressure
The fermentation issue inside the affected bottles has led to an excess buildup of carbonation, which can create high pressure inside the glass containers. This increases the risk of bottles bursting or caps forcefully popping off, potentially causing serious injuries to consumers.
The recall statement warns:
“Food products containing excess carbonation may result in bottle breakage or popping caps.”
Alcohol Formation Poses Additional Risks
Beyond the explosion hazard, the fermentation process has also converted sugars into alcohol, which could pose a health risk to consumers expecting a non-alcoholic beverage.
Those who consume the affected products may unknowingly ingest alcohol, which could be problematic for individuals avoiding alcohol for health, religious, or personal reasons.
Affected Batches and Disposal Instructions
The recall applies to 180ml and 540ml bottles of Salted Grapefruit with the following best before dates:
- 180ml bottles: 23/05/2026, 31/07/2026
- 540ml bottles: 05/01/2026, 09/02/2026, 19/03/2026, 04/05/2026, 29/05/2026
Consumers who own any of these bottles are urged NOT to open or drink them and should dispose of them safely.
StrangeLove Beverages has advised customers to contact the company for safe disposal instructions and reimbursement.

What Should Consumers Do?
If you have purchased Salted Grapefruit by StrangeLove, check the best before date immediately. If your bottle matches one of the affected batches:
- Do NOT open it – the pressure inside could cause an explosion.
- Dispose of it safely – follow the company’s guidance on handling the product.
- Request reimbursement – contact StrangeLove Beverages for compensation.
- Seek medical advice if needed – anyone experiencing health concerns after consuming the product should consult a doctor.
This recall highlights the hidden dangers of unintended fermentation, a rare but serious issue in carbonated beverages. Customers are advised to act quickly to ensure their safety and avoid potential harm.
