Coles supermarkets have issued an urgent recall of two peanut butter products after discovering contamination with aflatoxin, a toxic substance that can cause serious health risks. The recall applies to Coles Smooth Peanut Butter 1kg and Coles Crunchy Peanut Butter 1kg, which were sold both in-store and online between May 1 and June 30, 2025.

This recall comes after Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) warned consumers of the potential dangers posed by the affected products, which could be harmful if consumed. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin produced by specific moulds that grow on agricultural crops such as peanuts.

What Is Aflatoxin and Why Is It Dangerous?

Aflatoxins are a group of toxins produced by the fungi Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. These fungi can contaminate crops such as peanuts, corn, and cottonseed, especially under certain environmental conditions.

According to the NSW Food Authority, consumption of aflatoxins can lead to serious health consequences, including liver damage and increased cancer risk.

The particular batch of peanut butter recalled has a best-before date of February 5, 2027, and was available for purchase across Coles supermarkets nationwide. While the risk of contamination is low in most food products, peanuts are particularly susceptible to mould growth, making them more likely to harbour the toxin.

For consumers who purchased the affected products, Coles has advised that the items should not be consumed under any circumstances. Those who have already bought the products are encouraged to return them to any Coles store for a full refund. Coles Online customers can contact Coles Customer Care for assistance with returns or credits.

The Recall Process and Consumer Advice

Coles supermarkets have acted swiftly following the discovery of the contamination. In a statement, Coles assured customers that they are committed to food safety and have removed the affected products from sale. The company also issued an apology to customers for any inconvenience caused by the recall.

According to Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), consumers who have purchased the recalled peanut butter should seek medical attention if they experience any adverse health effects after consumption. The FSANZ has emphasised that while the risk of illness is minimal, aflatoxins can be harmful in large doses or with prolonged exposure.

For anyone who purchased these products, Coles has made it easy to return the items, ensuring that the recall process is as seamless as possible. Customers can simply bring the affected peanut butter to a Coles store for a full refund, or contact Coles Online for further assistance.
