Centrelink Cardholders Can Save Big on Energy Bills
This initiative, backed by the NSW government, aims to help families and pensioners save money while upgrading to more efficient appliances. If you have a top-loading washing machine that’s seen better days, you could swap it for an 8-kilogram front-loader. Not only will you save money upfront (the machines usually retail for $700-$800), but you’ll also cut down on water, energy, and detergent costs, which could lead to savings of up to $300 a year.
Water Minister Rose Jackson, who is spearheading the program, said it’s all about easing the pressure on households struggling with the rising cost of living. “By replacing old top loaders with modern, efficient machines, we’re cutting water and power bills by up to $300 a year,” Jackson said to Yahoo Finance. “Last time we sold out of washing machines in next to no time, which was a huge win but left some people disappointed to have missed out“.
A Success Story That’s Returning
This isn’t the first time the program has been a hit. The first round of the Washing Machine Exchange Program in 2025 was a huge success, with over 5,000 machines sold out in no time. The demand was so high that many people missed out, but now, with 6,500 machines available, the program is back for another round. Last time, some participants were left disappointed when the stock ran out, so there’s no time to waste this time around.
Who’s Eligible for the Program?
To take part, you need to meet a few criteria. First, you must be a NSW resident, over 18 years old, and hold a Centrelink card (Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, or Low Income Card). You’ll also need to be willing to trade in your old top-loader washing machine. The program is designed to help those who need it most, including pensioners and families feeling the financial strain.
The program has been made possible thanks to a partnership with The Good Guys Commercial, and the machines are usually sold at a steep discount. Seniors Minister Jodie Harrison urged eligible participants to act fast, saying, “Seniors, in particular, should register quickly, as the machines sold out within days last time.”
