Australian travelers heading to the United Kingdom will face a new requirement from January 8, 2025. The UK government has introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), a digital document aimed at streamlining entry procedures for visitors from previously visa-exempt nations, including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and several others.
What Is the ETA?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is not a visa but acts as a mandatory permission slip for eligible travelers. It allows multiple trips to the UK over a two-year period or until the passport expires, with each visit capped at six months. The measure previously applied to select Middle Eastern countries but has now expanded to include additional nations.
The ETA costs £10 (approximately AUD 20) and is designed to enhance border security while maintaining ease of travel for visitors.
How to Apply for an ETA
Australian travelers can apply for the ETA through the UK Government’s official website or via the dedicated mobile app available on Apple and Android platforms. The process requires:
- A valid Australian passport.
- A recent digital photo.
- A credit or debit card for payment.
- Answering a series of personal questions.
Most applications are processed within three working days, but travelers are encouraged to apply well in advance of their departure date. Importantly, the ETA must be approved before boarding a flight to the UK.
Exemptions and Considerations
Australians holding dual citizenship with the UK or Ireland are exempt from this requirement if they travel using their British, Irish, or other entitled passports. However, travelers without an ETA may be denied boarding or entry upon arrival.
