Anthony Albanese will remain Prime Minister of Australia after Labor won a resounding victory in the 2025 federal election. According to 9News, the party stormed to one of its largest majorities in history, in a night that also saw opposition leader Peter Dutton lose his own seat of Dickson—a first in Australian federal politics.

Labor Surges as Coalition Collapses

The scale of the Labor win became clear within minutes of the polls closing. “Nine projects the election is won by Labor,” political editor Charles Croucher said. “There is no path for the Liberal Party or the Coalition to win. Albo gets a second go and Labor wins the election.”

Labor is projected to secure at least 90 seats, surpassing the record set under Bob Hawke and Kevin Rudd. The victory cements Albanese’s place in Australian political history and gives his government a strong mandate heading into a second term.

Dutton Concedes and Exits Parliament

Peter Dutton’s concession was historic—not only did he concede defeat as opposition leader, but also as the losing candidate in his own seat. “We didn’t do well enough during this campaign. That much is obvious tonight and I accept full responsibility for that,” Dutton said.

He added, “Earlier on, I called the prime minister to congratulate him on his success tonight. It’s a historic occasion for the Labor Party, and we recognise that. I congratulated the prime minister and wished he and (fiancée) Jodie and (son) Nathan all the very best.” Dutton’s gracious farewell also included a heartfelt acknowledgment of Albanese’s late mother, “And I said to the prime minister that his mum would be incredibly proud of his achievement tonight, and he should be very proud of what he’s achieved.”

Albanese’s Vision for a Fairer Future

Albanese, visibly emotional in his victory speech, framed the result as a triumph for Australian values. “Today, the Australian people have voted for Australian values, for fairness, aspiration and opportunity for all,” he said.

“For the strength to show courage in adversity and kindness to those in need. Australians have voted for a future that holds true to these values, a future built on everything that brings us together as Australians and everything that sets our nation apart from the world.”
