Fuel shortages are escalating quickly across Western Australia, catching many motorists off guard. What began as a limited disruption has spread within hours to dozens of locations. While authorities insist supplies remain secure overall, the sudden spike is raising questions about how stable the situation really is.
Diesel Shortages in WA Surge Across Service Stations
The number of service stations without diesel in Western Australia (WA) has surged by more than 207% overnight, rising from 12 outlets on Wednesday to 45 on Thursday. Many of the impacted locations are in regional areas, where supply chains are often more fragile. In parallel, 19 service stations have also run out of unleaded petrol, adding to pressure on fuel availability across the state, reports Thewest.
For drivers in affected areas, this has already translated into longer searches for fuel—and, in some cases, limited options altogether. It’s not yet widespread everywhere, but the pattern is clearly expanding.
WA Government Responds to Fuel Supply Pressure
WA Treasurer Rita Saffioti has sought to reassure the public, stating that efforts are underway to redirect fuel stocks to areas most in need. Authorities are also working on improving real-time visibility of fuel availability across service stations. Despite the sharp increase in outages, she does not expect fuel rationing to be introduced in the immediate future. Still, she acknowledged the situation remains fluid, with multiple variables at play.
The state government is closely monitoring oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global supply route, as well as ongoing price fluctuations tied to international tensions.
Global Tensions Add Pressure to WA Fuel Supply
The current strain on fuel availability is linked, at least in part, to disruptions in global energy markets. Ongoing instability in the Middle East has contributed to uncertainty around supply flows. Officials point out that similar shocks have been experienced before, including during the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Each time, supply chains faced stress, though outcomes varied depending on how long disruptions lasted.
That broader context helps explain why authorities are cautious. The situation may stabilize—but it could also tighten further depending on global developments.
Alert Level Raised as WA Monitors Fuel Situation
Western Australia has already raised its fuel disruption alert level from “white” to “yellow”, indicating an elevated level of concern. A further escalation to “amber” would trigger more coordinated emergency measures and crisis-level planning. For now, officials maintain that fuel supplies remain secure overall, with shipments continuing to arrive and storage terminals still stocked.
Even so, the rapid increase in outages suggests a system under pressure. Whether this remains a short-term disruption or develops into something more prolonged will depend on how supply and demand evolve in the coming days.
