PORTUGAL / FRANCE. Voltalia announced on Wednesday 6 April 2022 that it had won a tender from the Portuguese Ministry of Energy and the Environment to build a floating solar power plant. This is the first project with this technology for the French renewable energy company owned by the Mulliez family association.
"We are looking forward to building our first floating solar power plant. This experience will create new opportunities in this field in other countries where Voltalia is active," commented Sébastien Clerc, CEO of the company, in a statement.
Voltalia will be responsible for the development, construction and operation of the plant, which will be located near the Cabril dam in Sertã, in the centre of the country (190 km north of Lisbon), on 33 hectares.
With a total capacity of between 33 and 40 megawatts (MW) - "depending on the final optimisation", says the company - it will cover 33 hectares and will produce electricity for the equivalent consumption of 70,300 inhabitants.
The Sertã floating solar power plant should be operational by 2026 at the latest. Voltalia's revenues will be assured by a 15-year sales contract signed by the Portuguese government, which will buy back the electricity at a price of €41.025 per MW.

The French company is already present in Portugal with 270 employees. It has based its operational centre (Global Solar Hub) in Porto to supervise its solar power plants in Europe, Africa and Latin America, which represent more than 1.2 gigawatts managed on its own behalf and for third-party customers. Voltalia has also designed the Cotovio solar power plant (48.9 MW) in Morgado do Agre in the Algarve in the south of the country in 2021. Its subsidiary specialising in on-site energy production (solar roofs, carports, etc.), Helexia, acquired in 2019, has an installed capacity of 19 MW in Portugal.
Founded in 2005, Voltalia (1,300 employees in twenty countries) now claims a production capacity in operation and under construction of more than 1.7 GW and a portfolio of projects under development of 11.1 GW.
