The New-Old Elites and their Relations with the EU: The Cases of Egypt and Tunisia

Europe’s southern neighbourhood is in turmoil. Over the last few years, the states in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have undergone fundamental societal, political, structural, demographic and economic changes.


These transformations cannot take place without effects on their foreign policy behaviour and international relations (IR). In contrast to most of the literature and policy analyses dealing with Euro-Mediterranean relations from an EU perspective, this paper aims to switch sides and analyse relations from a southern angle.
