EUROPEAN UNION. The Italian Social Democrat David Sassoli (63) was elected President of the European Parliament on Wednesday 3 July 2019 in Strasbourg.

The sixty-three-year-old former television journalist, who has been in politics as an MEP for ten years, won 345 votes (absolute majority) in the second round of voting ahead of Czech conservative Jan Zahradi (160 votes), German ecologist Ska Keller (119 votes) and Spain's far-left Sira Rego (43). No candidate from the EPP, the party that came out on top in the European elections (23-26 May 2019), was running to encourage alternation.

David Sassoli is replacing his compatriot Antonio Tajani (EPP, right), who has been in office since January 2017, on the roost for two and a half years.
