MEDITERRANEAN. Philip ter Woort was appointed director general of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the eastern Mediterranean region on Monday 27 April 2020.
Succeeding Heike Harmgart, appointed as director general for the South and East Mediterranean (Semed) region in 2019, he will be responsible for the institution's operations in Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza Strip from 1 July 2020.
Currently director of business development at the EBRD (London), Philip ter Woort will be based in Jordan. "We will focus on supporting the private sector in overcoming the coronavirus pandemic. For this a strong partnership with key stakeholders is essential," he said.
The future managing director for the Eastern Mediterranean region started his career in various management positions in Dutch banks and multinational companies in the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Russia. In 2009 he joined the EBRD as head of the Mongolia office. In 2013, he became the bank's first director for Egypt for four years and was then appointed to London.
