SPAIN. John McAfee, creator at the end of the 1980's of the anti-virus that bears his name, was arrested on Tuesday 6 October 2020 at El Prat airport (Barcelona), as he was preparing to take a flight to Istanbul.

Seventy-five years old, the computer scientist born in the United Kingdom and of American nationality must answer an indictment, pronounced in June 2020 but published only Monday, October 5, 2020 by the justice of his country, for tax fraud between 2014 and 2018. He is alleged to have failed to declare several million in income from the promotion of crypto-currency, consultancy services, conferences and the sale of rights for a future documentary on his life. These sums had been paid into other people's accounts and in virtual currencies to avoid declaring them for tax purposes.

An Interpol warrant had just been issued against him while he had been on the run since 2019. McAfee, who is in pre-trial detention, is expected to be extradited to the United States shortly.

Twice a candidate for the Libertarian Party's candidacy (2016 and 2020) for the US presidency, he was unable to obtain the nomination. His company McAfee Associates was bought in 2010 by Intel (for $ 7.6 billion) which renamed it Intel Security in 2014 after John McAfee's many legal setbacks and eccentricities.
