LIBYA. The Libyan Political Dialogue Forum approved, on Tuesday 19 January 2021, the mechanism for selecting the executive power. This decision obtained by fifty-one votes in favour (73%), nineteen against, two abstentions and two non-participation in the vote, marks a major step towards the organisation of national elections in the country scheduled for 24 December 2021. The decision was adopted by 63% of the votes cast.

The Forum, bringing together the different regions and political formations of Libya, thus followed the recommendations of its Consultative Committee which met in Geneva for four days (13 to January 2021). At the end of these discussions, Stephanie Williams, Acting Head of Manul (United Nations Support Mission in Libya) who has just been replaced by Ján Kubiš, welcomed the meeting: "the members of the Advisory Committee really knew how to seize the opportunity and assumed their responsibility with a constructive spirit, cooperative efforts and a great deal of patriotism". And indicated that "the best possible compromise" had been reached. The decision of the Political Dialogue Forum proves this today.

"Today marks the first anniversary of the Berlin International Conference on Libya. With this vote, the members of the Forum have taken a significant step forward towards the implementation of the roadmap adopted in Tunis in mid-November," Stephanie Williams said in a statement on Tuesday 19 January 2021. According to her, "the Libyans now have a real opportunity to overcome their differences and divisions, to choose a provisional government to reunify their institutions through democratic national elections long awaited. She confirmed the date of 24 December 2021 for their organisation.
