ALGERIA / TUNISIA. After more than two years of closure, the land borders between Algeria and Tunisia will reopen from 15 July 2022. The decision to close this passage was announced in March 2020 to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Air and sea links between the two countries were able to resume in June 2021

The two presidents, Algerian Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Tunisian Kaïs Saïed, reached an agreement on this subject on Tuesday 5 July 2022, on the occasion of the festivities for the sixty years of Algerian independence in which the two men participated together.

"In reality, the borders between the two countries have never been closed, since the transport of goods has continued despite the pandemic," the Algerian president said.

Towards a return of Algerian tourists to Tunisia

The flow of tourists between the two countries will therefore be able to resume. "This will allow Algerians to visit their second country, Tunisia, and Tunisians to come to their second country, Algeria," stressed Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Before the pandemic, each year, three to four million Algerians took their summer holidays in Tunisia. The vast majority of them travelled by land to reach Tunisia. By mid-May 2022, only 36,000 Algerians had travelled there.

"We are one people, even one family. We have a common history and the same destiny. Our wish is to open up new horizons for our two countries and our two peoples," commented Kaïs Saïed.

The borders between Algeria and Morocco will remain closed until further notice. The rupture of diplomatic relations between the two countries, decreed unilaterally by the Algerian government in August 2021, does not give for the moment any horizon to a lifting of these barriers.
