EGYPT / FRANCE. CMA CGM (30.3 bn$ - 25 bn€ - turnover and 110,000 employees) will manage and operate Pier 55, the future multipurpose terminal of the port of Alexandria, its CEO Rodolphe Saadé was informed on Wednesday 27 January 2021, while on a trip to Egypt. The Marseille group should soon sign a long term partnership with the Egyptian authorities concerning the development of logistics solutions, digitalisation, training of the younger generations in the maritime and logistics domains. CMA CGM will also make investments in the country.
With a capacity of 1.5 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent containers), the Egyptian terminal will be operational in 2022. It will cover an area of 560,000 m² with quays more than 2 km long.
The fourth largest shipowner in the world already has nearly 300 employees in Egypt and calls at six ports in the country. Its ships cross the Suez Canal more than 700 times each year.
With the Alexandria Pier 55, CMA CGM is strengthening its presence in the Mediterranean. The group is already established in Marseille-Fos (where its LNG-propelled ships are supported), Seville, Malta, Thessaloniki (Greece) and the Syrian port of Latakia.
