Banking Competition, Convergence and Growth across Macro-Regions of MENA

Published in march 2018. Written by Samah Issa, Claudia Girardone and Stuart Snaith

This paper represents the first study to examine convergence of bank competition in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and the impact of bank market power on growth.

This paper examines banking competition of domestic banks within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. A necessary condition for competition across countries in this region is integration.1 Historically, integration in MENA has taken place predominantly in the real economy, however, over the last 20 years there has been an increased appetite to broaden and deepen this integration, both within the region and internationally, to encourage growth, increase employment, and build more democratic and inclusive societies (Rouis and Tabor, 2013).
