MEDITERRANEAN. Less than thirty-six years old, running a business for more than three years and based in one of the countries on the three shores of the Mediterranean selected*. This is the profile sought by the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (Arlem) as part of its call for applications to elect the "Young Local Entrepreneur in the Mediterranean 2022".

Applications can be submitted until 15 August 2022. They will be evaluated according to multiple criteria, including the impact of the company on the community, social progress and development; its impact on job creation; the percentage of women in its workforce; respect for the social rights of employees; its degree of innovation. But also on the support it receives from the local or regional community.

"As support for sustainable economic development remains one of Arlem's three priorities, the Assembly continues to be involved in helping young entrepreneurs. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the fact that it has persisted for so long, has greatly increased the needs of young local entrepreneurs for support in developing their businesses," said an Arlem statement. "The work to overcome the economic and social consequences of the pandemic is more successful if local authorities and young entrepreneurs work hand in hand. In order to present successful examples, we will once again encourage applications from young entrepreneurs," the text continues.

Albanian woman wins 2021 award

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) supports this award and is part of the jury.

The young local entrepreneur in the Mediterranean will be chosen on 28 November 2022 during the Mediterranean Day and in the margins of the next Arlem plenary session.

The winner of the award will succeed Erilda Krasi, director of the Albanian tour operator 1001 Albanian Adventures in Berat (South Central Albania), who won the award in February 2021. Her company was cited as "an example of sustainable and responsible tourism that contributes to the regeneration of the local economic fabric and the urban environment".

The other four finalists were the Palestinian company Blue Filter (natural wastewater treatment filters), the Moroccan agricultural cooperative Golden Africa (production and sale of argan oil and derived cosmetic and food products) and the two Algerian companies Second Life (production and distribution of water as well as waste management for depollution) and Solec (installation of photovoltaic panels and production of LED street lamps for public lighting).

Launched in 2010 by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), following an announcement in November 2008, the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly brings together local and regional representatives from the European Union and its Mediterranean partners.
