The UK is bracing itself for three days of snow and three days of yellow weather warnings issued by the Met Office, from Sunday evening until Tuesday. Meanwhile, British Gas has issued a 48-hour warning to homeowners, warning of the dangers posed to boilers when temperatures fall below freezing.

Why Freezing Temperatures Threaten Boilers

British Gas warns: “A frozen pipe is one of the biggest causes of winter boiler breakdowns, but there are steps you can take to prevent it.”

Signs of Trouble With Your Boiler

Several warning signs could indicate a frozen condensate pipe or other cold-weather boiler issues, including:

  • Gurgling noises from your central heating system.
  • The boiler failing to start.
  • Little or no water from your taps.
  • Slow-draining sinks or toilets.

There may also be visible signs of damage when water pressure drops or damp patches form on walls, ceilings or floors. Bulging walls or ceilings may indicate more serious water damage.

How to Prevent and Address Frozen Pipes

British Gas advises homeowners to insulate their pipes to reduce the risk of freezing. If you suspect a pipe is frozen, follow these steps to thaw it:

  1. Apply warm (not boiling) water to the pipe.
  2. Use a warm compress, such as a hot water bottle, to gently heat the pipe.
  3. Locate your stopcock valve—typically under the sink or in a cupboard—and turn it off to prevent flooding if a pipe bursts.

The company advises not to turn the water supply back on until a professional plumber has resolved the issue.

Preparing Your Home for Sub-Zero Conditions with British Gas

To minimize the risk of boiler issues during this cold spell, British Gas recommends:

  • Keeping your heating on low to maintain consistent warmth in pipes.
  • Bleeding radiators to ensure efficiency.
  • Ensuring outdoor pipes are adequately insulated.
  • Knowing where your stopcock is located and ensuring it is functional.

Homeowners are urged to take action quickly to avoid costly repairs as temperatures are forecasted to hit lows of -2 °C in some regions.
