The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced November 16 as the opening date for adopting letters through its Operation Santa program, urging Americans, businesses, and community groups to help families struggling to afford Christmas gifts.
USPS Calls for Team Effort Ahead of November 16
The annual holiday initiative connects people facing financial hardship with volunteers willing to purchase and ship gifts requested in letters to Santa.
According to The US Sun, USPS Vice President of Marketing Sheila Holman has encouraged companies and organizations to work together, particularly when letters contain requests for multiple members of the same household.
“Every year we receive thousands of letters filled with holiday wishes — often outnumbering available adopters — many letters come from entire households,” Holman said.
The number of requests creates a challenge for the program. Some letters represent the wishes of several children or an entire family, making them more demanding for individual donors to fulfill.
“To help these families, we encourage companies and organizations to form teams to adopt a household together, ensuring everyone in the home can share in the joy of the holidays.”
The appeal seeks to bring more participants into a program that receives thousands of requests each year. By coordinating their contributions, workplace teams and community organizations can take on larger gift lists that might otherwise remain unanswered.

Key USPS Deadlines for the 2026 Holiday Season
The 2026 Operation Santa schedule includes several dates for families requesting assistance and Americans interested in donating gifts.
USPS began accepting letters on September 14, allowing households to submit their Christmas wishes well before the holiday shopping season.
Registration for individuals interested in adopting letters opened on Monday, November 2. Approved participants can begin selecting letters on November 16, when adoption officially opens.
Families hoping to receive assistance have until December 5 to submit their letters. The program’s final adoption date falls on December 12, giving participants a limited window to select requests and arrange deliveries.
USPS also encourages adopters to ship their gifts by December 12 to improve the chances of delivery before Christmas.
These deadlines serve different purposes. November 16 marks the beginning of letter adoption, rather than the final opportunity to participate.
How Americans Can Adopt Letters and Send Christmas Gifts
People who want to participate must first complete a USPS registration form. The Postal Service reviews applications before approving adopters to select letters and fulfill requests.
Once approved, participants can browse available letters, choose requests they wish to support, and purchase the corresponding gifts.
The program also offers an online shopping option through its partnership with Toys R Us, designed to simplify gift selection and shipping.
“The Postal Service is again working with Toys R Us to provide Santa’s Gift Shoppe, an online gift catalog to give adopters an easy way to buy and ship gifts directly to recipients,” the USPS said.
The catalog provides another route for donors who prefer to purchase gifts online rather than organize shipments themselves.
Why USPS Is Encouraging Businesses to Participate
Operation Santa relies on voluntary participation, and demand can exceed the number of people available to adopt letters.
That imbalance explains the Postal Service’s emphasis on group participation this year. Businesses, organizations, and other teams can pool their resources to fulfill requests from households with several family members.
The approach allows participants to share the cost and responsibility of purchasing gifts while extending assistance beyond individual requests.
For Americans planning to participate, the next milestone is November 16, when approved adopters can begin choosing letters. USPS has set December 12 as both the final day to adopt a letter and the recommended deadline for shipping gifts.
