Amazon has begun issuing refunds of up to $200 to eligible Prime customers following a $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over allegations of unauthorized subscriptions and difficult cancellation procedures. Some customers will receive payments automatically, without submitting a claim.
Why Amazon Is Refunding Prime Subscribers
According to ABC7 Los Angeles, Amazon began distributing its first round of automatic refunds in early October 2026, following a settlement announced in September. The agreement addresses allegations that the company enrolled millions of consumers in its paid Amazon Prime membership program without their knowledge or consent.
The FTC also accused Amazon of making it unnecessarily difficult for subscribers to cancel their memberships. Consumers who wanted to end their subscriptions allegedly encountered obstacles that prevented them from completing the process easily.
The $2.5 billion settlement represents a major consumer protection action against the online retailer. Affected customers can now recover some of the money associated with their Prime subscriptions, although eligibility depends on specific enrollment dates, cancellation attempts, and membership usage.

Who Qualifies for the $200 Amazon Prime Refund?
Not every Prime subscriber will receive a payment. The automatic refund process targets customers who meet particular conditions related to their membership history.
Under the eligibility criteria described in the report, customers must have enrolled in Amazon Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025.
They must also have attempted to cancel their membership online during that period without successfully completing the cancellation.
Another requirement concerns how frequently subscribers used Prime services. Eligible customers must have used no more than 20 Prime benefits during a 12-month period. These benefits can include services such as Prime Video and Amazon Music Prime.
The usage restriction means that some long-standing subscribers may not qualify, even if they experienced difficulties canceling their memberships.
The $200 figure is the maximum refund, not a guaranteed payment for every qualifying customer.
How Refund Payments Will Reach Customers
Customers included in the automatic refund process do not need to complete paperwork or submit a separate claim.
Amazon is distributing payments through Venmo, PayPal, or mailed checks, depending on the payment method available to the recipient.
Recipients should pay close attention to the payment instructions. The reported redemption window is 60 days from the payment’s issue date, meaning eligible customers could lose the opportunity to collect their refund if they fail to act within that period.
Customers should also remain cautious about unexpected messages requesting sensitive financial information. The automatic refund process does not require eligible recipients to pay a processing fee.
Some Customers Who Already Received $51 May Get More
The settlement also includes a provision relevant to consumers who previously received money through an earlier settlement.
According to the report, customers who already collected $51 may still qualify for an additional $149, bringing their combined payments to the $200 maximum.
This does not mean that every customer who received an earlier payment will automatically collect the difference. Eligibility remains tied to the applicable settlement requirements.
The additional payment provision could matter for customers who assumed their previous refund represented the full amount they were entitled to receive.
When Eligible Prime Customers Can Expect Their Money
Amazon’s initial automatic payments began in October 2026, but the distribution process extends beyond the first round.
Eligible customers are expected to receive their refunds by April 2027, according to the timeline reported by ABC7.
Payments may therefore arrive at different times, even among customers who satisfy the same eligibility conditions.
For recipients, the most immediate deadline remains the redemption period: refund payments must be redeemed within 60 days of their issue date.
