Kikis Restaurant has closed its final two locations in Brownsville, Texas, ending a 22-year run for the family-owned Mexican restaurant business. The owners attributed the shutdown to financial pressure tied to a tax situation following state audits, rather than a lack of customers.
Kikis Restaurant Shuts Down Its Last Brownsville Locations
Founded in 2004, Kikis Restaurant built its business around Mexican food and family-style fajitas in Brownsville, a South Texas city near the U.S.-Mexico border. Its final two restaurants operated at 6170 S. Padre Island Hwy. and 965 W. Ruben M. Torres Sr. Blvd.
According to The Street, both locations have now closed, leaving Kikis without an operating restaurant after more than two decades in business.
The family announced the shutdown publicly as it prepared to end the restaurant’s long presence in the community.
“Today we have to write one of the most difficult messages in our history,” Kikis Restaurant wrote in a Facebook post, which was translated into English.
“It deeply pains us to say goodbye to something our family worked on for more than two decades. We leave with sadness, yes, but also with hearts full of gratitude and pride for everything we achieved together.”
The announcement marked the end of a local restaurant business that had served customers in Brownsville for 22 years.
Owners Point To Tax Problems And Mounting Expenses
The owners said weak customer demand was not the reason behind the closures.
In comments reported by Channel 5 News, the family said it had faced a “difficult” tax situation after audits conducted by the Texas Comptroller during the preceding several months.
According to the family, the business was making large monthly payments connected to that situation while simultaneously paying its regular expenses. Those obligations included employee payroll, rent and operating costs.
The financial strain eventually affected the restaurants’ ability to keep up with rent, the owners said. Kikis ultimately fell behind on those payments.
That explanation distinguishes the shutdown from a simple decline in customer traffic. The family specifically maintained that the restaurants continued to receive business as financial obligations accumulated elsewhere.
Customer support was visible during the restaurant’s final days. Kikis had originally expected to close its Padre Island Highway location on Sept. 25, 2026. Support from customers allowed the restaurant to continue operating through Sept. 27, according to another Facebook post from the business.
That location became the final Kikis Restaurant to operate before the chain shut down completely.
The Closure Comes During A Difficult Period For Other Mexican Restaurant Brands
Kikis is not the only Mexican restaurant business to reduce its footprint in 2026. Several chains have closed restaurants, withdrawn from individual markets or ceased operations following financial and operational challenges.
On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina closed its remaining restaurants in June 2026 after Pappas Restaurants acquired the business out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Gringos Locos closed its Orlando-area restaurants in August, while Fuzzy’s Tacos & Margs shut its remaining Houston-area locations in September.
Del Taco has also experienced restaurant closures and departures from multiple markets following separate bankruptcies involving franchisees.
Those cases involve different companies and financial circumstances, so they do not establish a single cause behind closures across the Mexican restaurant sector. They do show that Kikis’ shutdown arrives amid a series of notable restaurant closures in several U.S. markets.
