Across the United States, some Social Security beneficiaries are scheduled to receive their monthly payments on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The date marks the final payment in the month’s regular Wednesday distribution cycle.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a timetable based mainly on beneficiaries’ birth dates for many monthly payments. The schedule determines when recipients receive their money and applies to a large share of the programme’s more than 70 million beneficiaries.
Who Receives Social Security Payments on September 23?
The September 23 payment date applies to beneficiaries whose birthdays fall between the 21st and 31st of any month. According to the SSA, many Social Security recipients receive payments on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on their date of birth.
The September 2026 Wednesday cycle began with payments on September 9 for people born from the 1st to the 10th of any month. Those born between the 11th and 20th received their payments on September 16, while recipients with birthdays from the 21st to the 31st are scheduled for September 23.
The birth-date rule can differ for people who receive benefits based on another person’s employment record. In those cases, the SSA uses the other individual’s birthday to determine the payment date.
The September schedule also includes other payment groups that do not follow the Wednesday birth-date system. Beneficiaries who started receiving monthly payments before May 1997 were scheduled to receive their September Social Security payment on Thursday, September 3.
The same date also applied to people who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Unlike Social Security, SSI is a needs-based programme and does not depend on a person’s employment record.
Payment Amounts and Ways Beneficiaries Receive Money
Monthly benefit amounts vary depending on the type of benefit received. According to AS USA, average monthly payments were $2,031.74 for retirement benefits, $1,498.43 for disability benefits and $1,634.61 for survivor benefits. SSI payments are separate from Social Security benefits. The same source reported that the average monthly SSI payment was $736.54.
Beneficiaries can receive their payments through different methods. The most common option is direct deposit, which allows recipients to provide their bank information through the online “my Social Security” portal.
For people without a bank account, payments can also be made through the Direct Express card. According to the SSA, the card works as a debit card that allows beneficiaries to receive their money electronically. Registration can be completed by contacting the relevant Social Security services or by visiting a Social Security office.
The September 23 payment completes the month’s Social Security distribution schedule. Recipients who do not see their payment arrive as expected are generally advised to check their payment details and contact the SSA if they need assistance.
