The United States Postal Service will temporarily block access to several of its iconic blue collection boxes in New York City this weekend as part of a security measure linked to a major public event on Fifth Avenue.

USPS Takes Action Ahead Of Fifth Avenue Race

The affected collection boxes will be sealed or removed on Saturday, September 12, and are expected to reopen on Monday, September 14. The closures will affect locations along both sides of Fifth Avenue between East 59th Street and East 82nd Street.

According to The Sun, the temporary shutdown is connected to a race organized by the New York Road Runners, which will bring thousands of runners and spectators to the area.

The event requires additional security measures because of the large crowds expected along one of Manhattan’s busiest routes.

Postal Service Explains Temporary Mail Restrictions

USPS said the move follows standard procedures used during large public gatherings where temporary access restrictions are needed.

In a statement USPS said: “In the interest of safety and security, postal officials will temporarily seal or remove Postal Service collection boxes on Saturday, September 12, in New York City.

“The familiar blue collection boxes will be inaccessible until they are reopened on Monday, September 14.

“US Mail Collection Boxes impacted at the following locations: Both sides of 5th Ave between East 59th Street and East 82nd Street.

“For additional locations to deposit mail, customers are directed to usps.com and to use Quick Tools to Find Locations.

“Use the dropdown for collection boxes or post offices to find alternate locations for secure mail deposits in the immediate area.”

Similar Closures Have Taken Place During NYC Events

The USPS has previously sealed collection boxes in New York City during large public events. The measure was used before the annual Asian and Pacific Islander Parade in May and ahead of the 69th Puerto Rican Parade Day in June.

These temporary restrictions allow postal officials to limit access to collection points in areas with high pedestrian traffic and increased security operations.

The affected Fifth Avenue collection boxes will remain unavailable until Monday, September 14.
