The Social Security Administration distributes most retirement benefits on Wednesdays, using beneficiaries’ birth dates to determine the payment schedule. The system affects millions of Americans who depend on monthly benefits, while the program continues to face discussions in Washington over its long-term funding.

Who Receives the Sept. 9 Payment

Beneficiaries born from the 1st through the 10th day of any month will receive their monthly Social Security payment on Wednesday, Sept. 9, according to the SSA payment calendar. The schedule is part of the agency’s regular system for sending benefits throughout the month.

Recipients born between the 11th and 20th day of the month are scheduled to receive payments on the third Wednesday of the month. Those born after the 20th day are set to receive their payments on the fourth Wednesday.

Some beneficiaries follow a different schedule. People who started receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 generally receive payments on the third day of the month, unless that date falls on a weekend or holiday. Individuals who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income receive their Social Security payment on the third day of the month and their SSI payment on the first day of the month.

According to the Social Security Administration, these payment dates are established through the annual benefits calendar and are based on the type of benefit and the recipient’s circumstances.

How the September Payment Schedule Works

The September payment schedule follows the standard pattern used by the Social Security Administration for most beneficiaries. Payments are normally issued on Wednesdays, with birth dates determining whether recipients are paid during the second, third, or fourth week of the month.

The agency also provides a separate calendar for Supplemental Security Income payments. SSI recipients generally receive payments on the first business day of the month. For September 2026, SSI payments were sent on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The remaining SSI payment dates listed for 2026 include Thursday, Oct. 1, for October payments; Friday, Oct. 30, for November payments; Tuesday, Dec. 1, for December payments; and Friday, Dec. 31, for January 2027 payments, according to the SSA calendar.

The timing of monthly payments remains a regular concern for beneficiaries managing household expenses. The Social Security program provides monthly benefits mainly for older and retired recipients, and payment schedules allow beneficiaries to anticipate when funds will arrive.

According to the Social Security Administration, the published calendar is designed to show recipients when payments are expected throughout the year. For September 2026, the first group of beneficiaries receiving Wednesday payments begins with those born between the 1st and 10th of the month.
