In just a few weeks, Wells Fargo customers across the country will face a 24-hour banking blackout as the bank shuts down all of its 6,289 branches for Memorial Day. This nationwide shutdown on May 25 will leave many customers unable to access in-person services, marking a pause to remember fallen soldiers.

Memorial Day Bank Shutdown Affects Thousands of Customers

Wells Fargo is joining other major banks, including Goldman Sachs, Citibank, U.S. Bank, and Capital One, in observing Memorial Day, a federal holiday dedicated to honoring military personnel who died in service to the country. On this day, most financial institutions, including Wells Fargo, will close their doors for a 24-hour period.

While customers won’t be able to visit their local branches or speak to in-person tellers, they can still access ATM withdrawals and online banking services. Routine banking tasks like checking balances, transferring funds, and making payments can still be done, although processing might be delayed by a day.

Bank Reopens on May 26

The Wells Fargo branches will reopen on May 26, and any in-person queries that customers have will be addressed once the bank resumes normal operations. For those needing immediate assistance, online banking and ATMs will remain available, but any urgent issues requiring in-person service will have to wait.

Memorial Day is one of 11 federal holidays each year when Wells Fargo and other big banks are closed. Other holidays include Christmas Day, Easter, Labor Day, and Veterans Day, during which branches will also be inaccessible.

Other Major Banks Closed for Memorial Day

Wells Fargo isn’t the only bank closing for Memorial Day. Other major financial institutions, such as SunTrust Bank, Santander Bank, BBVA, and Citizens Bank, will also observe the holiday with a 24-hour shutdown. This is a common practice among large banks in the U.S., ensuring employees have time to honor the holiday.

A Time to Remember

Wells Fargo, in a message posted last year, emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in military service: “On Memorial Day, we pause to remember those who sacrificed their lives in service to our country. Their legacy and bravery will never be forgotten,” reports The Sun.

After Memorial Day, Juneteenth (June 19) will be the next federal holiday on which Wells Fargo branches will be closed, followed by other holidays throughout the year.

So, mark your calendars—May 25 will be a day without in-person banking for Wells Fargo customers, but digital services will still be at your fingertips.
