Fish Recall Triggers Highest Risk Alert Affecting 13 States: FDA Issues Most Urgent Warning

The withdrawal affects thousands of cases of Fu Zhou brand fish balls distributed across more than a dozen states, with officials warning that consumers allergic to wheat or sesame could face life-threatening reactions. The recall initiated by Koikoi Trading Inc. in late January has now received heightened federal attention following the discovery that certain frozen fish ball products contain undeclared wheat and sesame. These allergens are not listed on the product labels, creating a significant health risk for the millions of Americans who live with food allergies.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, a Class I recall is reserved for situations where there is a reasonable probability that exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death. The agency’s classification system helps consumers understand the severity of food safety issues, with Class I representing the highest threat level among three categories.

Understanding the Seriousness of Undeclared Allergens

For individuals with food allergies, the difference between a properly labeled product and one with undeclared ingredients can quite literally be a matter of life and death. The recall specifically affects those with wheat and sesame allergies, two of the major allergens that must be clearly identified on food packaging under federal regulations.

Food Allergy Research & Education, commonly known as FARE, estimates that approximately 33 million people in the United States have at least one food allergy. Within this population, about 2.4 million individuals have wheat allergy and roughly 700,000 have sesame allergy, making the scope of potentially affected consumers substantial.

The company’s original announcement to the FDA noted that no illnesses had been reported as of January 28. Despite the absence of confirmed adverse reactions, public health officials emphasize that the risk of severe allergic responses among unsuspecting consumers remains high enough to warrant urgent action.

Product Details and Distribution Information

Koikoi Trading Inc., based in Commerce, California, initiated the recall on January 27 after discovering that their Fu Zhou frozen fish balls contained undeclared wheat and sesame. According to a company press release, the recall encompasses specific lots of fish ball products in three sizes: 200-gram packages containing 40 pieces, 400-gram packages containing 20 pieces, and five-pound packages containing four pieces.

The distribution of these products has been widespread, reaching consumers through multiple channels. The release indicated that the fish balls were distributed through foodservice operations and e-commerce platforms, potentially reaching customers via direct delivery to restaurant patrons, through distributors, and through online fulfillment centers. The products may have been shipped to California, Washington, Oregon, New York, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, and Colorado.

Consumers who have purchased these frozen fish balls should immediately stop using them and segregate any remaining inventory. The company advises marking recalled products as “Hold – Recall” and contacting Koikoi Trading Inc. at 323-588-9888 during regular business hours or via email at [email protected] for specific instructions regarding returns, credits, or replacements.
