Nissan has issued two recalls covering almost 643,000 Rogue compact SUVs in the United States after identifying separate engine and transmission-related defects. Federal safety regulators warn that the issues could lead to a loss of power and, in some cases, increase the risk of fire.
The recalls affect recent model years of one of Nissan’s best-selling vehicles, raising fresh concerns about manufacturing quality and vehicle reliability. According to CBS News, the action involves a combined total of 642,698 Rogue SUVs and follows an earlier recall expansion announced last year.
The recalls were announced in coordination with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which outlined the mechanical faults and the potential safety consequences. Owners will be notified by mail in late March, and repairs will be carried out at no cost.
Engine Bearing Defect Raises Fire and Power Loss Concerns
The first recall affects 323,917 Nissan Rogue vehicles from model years 2023 through 2025 that are equipped with 3-cylinder 1.5-liter variable-compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. According to NHTSA, engine bearings in these vehicles could fail, potentially causing hot oil to leak and increasing the risk of a fire.
Federal regulators also warned that the defect could lead to engine failure and a sudden loss of power while the vehicle is in use. Such a loss of propulsion heightens the likelihood of a crash, particularly at higher speeds or in heavy traffic.
CBS News reports that this recall expands on a previous action Nissan issued in June, which covered more than 480,000 Rogue, Infiniti, and Altima vehicles. Regulators said at the time that manufacturing defects in certain models could result in engine power loss during operation. The newly announced recall broadens that earlier measure, focusing specifically on affected Rogue SUVs from the 2023 to 2025 model years.
Dealers will inspect the engines in the recalled vehicles and carry out necessary repairs free of charge. The recall identification number for this action is R25E2.
Electronic Throttle Body Gear Failure Affects 2024-2025 Models
A second, separate recall involves 318,781 Rogue SUVs from model years 2024 and 2025 that are also equipped with the 1.5-liter VC-Turbo engine. In these vehicles, the gears within the electronic throttle body assembly may break, according to NHTSA.
The failure of these gears can disrupt throttle control, increasing the risk of an accident. While distinct from the engine bearing issue, this defect similarly centers on components that directly affect vehicle power delivery and drivability.
As with the first recall, Nissan dealers will inspect and repair the affected components at no cost to owners. The recall number assigned to this action is R25E3. According to CBS News, Nissan will begin mailing notification letters to affected owners for both recalls on March 27, 2026.
Nissan, headquartered in Japan, has not announced any additional measures beyond the inspections and repairs outlined by regulators. For now, the company’s focus appears to be on contacting owners and addressing the mechanical faults through its dealer network, as federal safety authorities continue to monitor the situation.
