Massive Recall: Over 200,000 Amazon Power Banks Posing Major Fire Danger

A major recall affecting over 200,000 portable power banks sold on Amazon has been issued following concerns over fire hazards. The recall, which involves INIU 10,000mAh portable power banks, has come after reports of the devices overheating and causing fires. The risk stems from the lithium-ion batteries in the devices, which have a history of overheating and posing fire dangers. The recall not only highlights safety issues with these specific power banks but also sheds light on the broader concern regarding the safety of lithium-ion batteries in consumer electronics.

Power Banks Linked to Fires and Burn Injuries

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the INIU 10,000mAh portable power banks, model BI-B41, have been implicated in multiple overheating incidents. The power banks, which were sold on Amazon for around $18, have caused at least 11 fires. These fires have resulted in property damage totaling more than $380,000 and three reported minor burn injuries.

The power banks affected by the recall feature either a black or blue case with the INIU logo and a paw-print LED light on the front. The recall applies only to devices with serial numbers 000G21, 000H21, 000I21, and 000L21. Consumers who own these specific power banks are advised to stop using them immediately and register for a full refund through INIU’s recall page.

The root of the problem lies in the lithium-ion battery used in these devices. While lithium-ion batteries are widely used in portable electronics for their efficiency, they have a well-documented history of overheating or catching fire under certain conditions. As a result, power banks and other devices powered by these batteries pose an ongoing fire risk, especially when they malfunction.

Disposal and Refund Process for Affected Consumers

The recall also includes important guidance on how to dispose of the affected power banks. Due to the dangerous nature of lithium-ion batteries, they cannot be discarded in regular trash or standard recycling bins. The CPSC recommends that consumers contact their local household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center for proper disposal instructions.

In addition to disposing of the recalled power banks safely, consumers are urged to take action by visiting the INIU website, where they can verify their power bank’s serial number and request a refund. This is a critical step in addressing the potential danger these devices pose. Consumers who have experienced any unusual symptoms, such as excessive heat or leakage, are urged to stop using the power banks immediately.

The recall was prompted after the manufacturer, Shenzhen Topstar Industry Co., Ltd., received several reports of power banks overheating. The risk of fire and burn injuries associated with these devices is significant enough that immediate action is necessary to prevent further incidents.
