Prime Food Processing LLC, a Brooklyn-based company, issued the voluntary recall of over 2,000 packs of two types of Lava Buns: Lava Bun with Salted Egg Yolk and Lava Bun with Green Tea Flavor. The recall, announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on November 20, 2025, affects products sold between April and November 2025. Although no illnesses have been reported, consumers with milk allergies are urged to return or dispose of the affected buns immediately.
Undeclared Milk Poses a Serious Health Threat
The recall stems from a failure in Prime Food Processing’s labeling process, which led to an oversight in declaring milk as an allergen. According to the FDA, both types of Lava Buns contain milk in the form of unsalted butter, but the ingredient was not listed on the packaging.
Milk is one of the top eight food allergens in the United States, and allergic reactions can range from mild symptoms, such as rashes and stomach cramps, to more severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that can cause difficulty breathing and shock.
The buns were distributed to Asian grocery stores in 33 states, including major markets such as California, New York, Florida, and Texas, between April 2 and November 14. A total of 2,243 packs of the dessert buns have been affected. Consumers who purchased these buns are urged to return them for a full refund or discard them. The company has made customer support available at 718-963-2323 for further questions.
No Reported Illnesses, But Risks Remain
As of the FDA’s latest update, no allergic reactions or illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. However, the company’s quick response reflects the potential risks posed by undeclared allergens. Milk allergies, which affect millions of Americans, are known for their unpredictability, with reactions often occurring within minutes to hours after consumption. In some cases, the symptoms can escalate rapidly, making it critical for individuals with milk sensitivities to avoid consuming the affected buns.
The recall of Prime Food Processing’s Lava Buns is part of a broader pattern of allergen-related issues in the food industry. According to the FDA, recalls due to undeclared allergens have been increasing, as food manufacturers strive to address consumer concerns about product safety.
The company has assured the public that the issue was caused by a temporary breakdown in its label review process and has taken steps to prevent similar errors in the future. The FDA’s alert is an important reminder that even minor lapses in labeling can have serious consequences, particularly for those with severe food allergies.
