The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has raised the risk level on the recall of more than 2.4 million cases of MadeGood granola bars after reports of potential metal contamination. The recall, initially announced in December 2024, has now been classified as a “Class II” risk, indicating potential health concerns for consumers.

Riverside Natural Foods Inc., the manufacturer behind MadeGood products, voluntarily issued the recall after receiving complaints that the granola bars could contain metal fragments. The recall has triggered a response from both the FDA and the company to ensure consumer safety.

What Prompted the Recall?

According to MadeGood, the recall stems from a manufacturing issue where small metal bristles from a cleaning brush were inadvertently incorporated into the granola bars during production. The company identified a total of seven complaints from customers who reported finding metal pieces in their products, leading to the voluntary recall.

Despite no injuries being reported, the FDA has now escalated the recall to a Class II classification. This category is applied to products that carry a risk of causing temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, but serious long-term harm is deemed unlikely. The decision reflects concerns that consumers may experience discomfort or minor health issues should they consume contaminated bars.

The affected products, which include popular flavors such as Chocolate Chip, Mixed Berry, and Strawberry, were produced between January and November 2024. They were distributed across the United States, Canada, and other international markets. MadeGood has already addressed the issue in its manufacturing process and is working closely with retailers to remove the contaminated items from store shelves.

How to Check and What to Do If You Own Affected Products

Consumers who have purchased any of the affected MadeGood products are urged to carefully check their packaging. The recalled items feature a variety of flavors and were sold in both individual and multi-pack configurations. MadeGood is offering full refunds to customers who return the affected products to the store where they were purchased.

For those who believe they may have bought one of the recalled products, the company recommends checking the recall list on its website or calling the MadeGood Consumer Hotline at 855-215-5695, available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. MadeGood has taken immediate corrective action to prevent the issue from recurring and assures customers that the situation is under control.
