EU. In 2019, each inhabitant of the European Union (EU) generated 34.4 kg of plastic packaging waste. This figure, from a Eurostat study published on Wednesday 27 October 2021, states that only 14.1 kg was recycled.

The survey by the EU's statistical office also reveals that between 2009 and 2019, this volume generated by each European increased by 24% (+6.7 kg per inhabitant). At the same time, recycling increased by 50% (+4.7 kg). However, 'despite this improvement, the amount of plastic packaging that was not recycled has increased by 2.0 kg per capita since 2009, due to the higher increase in the absolute value of plastic packaging waste generated', Eurostat points out.

In total, 41% of plastic packaging waste was recycled in the EU. Among the most virtuous Member States are three Mediterranean countries. Spain recycled 52%, Cyprus 51% and Slovenia 50%. However, they are still a long way from Lithuania's 70% and the Czech Republic's 61%.

On the other hand, Malta and France are the least aware of this action. The two worst performers in the EU recycle only 11% (2018 data) and 27% of their plastic packaging waste respectively.
