Three US states — New York, Georgia, and Alaska — are issuing new stimulus checks to eligible residents in August in an effort to address ongoing cost-of-living challenges. The payments are part of state-specific programs designed to provide financial relief at a time when many households are experiencing the effects of inflation, supply chain difficulties, and policy changes.

According to The Sun, these measures follow a series of economic pressures, including Donald Trump’s tariff policy and a nationwide shortage of eggs, both of which have influenced market prices. Each state has set its own eligibility criteria, payment amounts, and distribution schedules.

New York One-Time Relief Checks

More than eight million New Yorkers are set to receive a one-time relief check worth up to $400, with eligibility requirements described as strict due to clearly defined income thresholds and filing criteria.

The program targets taxpayers whose earnings fall within specific ranges and is structured to provide higher payments to lower-income households. Payment amounts vary based on income and filing status:

  • Joint filers earning up to $150,000: $400
  • Joint filers earning $150,000–$300,000: $300
  • Single filers earning up to $75,000: $200
  • Single filers earning $75,000–$150,000: $150

These stimulus checks will be automatically issued, with no separate application required.

Georgia Surplus Tax Refunds

Georgia’s third round of surplus tax refund stimulus checks is now being distributed after earlier delays. Eligible residents had to apply before May 1, and must have filed state tax returns in both 2023 and 2024. Those who owe money to the Department of Revenue, for example unpaid taxes, will not receive a payment.

Amounts are based on filing status:

  • Single or married filing separately: up to $250
  • Head of household: up to $375
  • Married filing jointly: up to $500

Governor Brian Kemp stated:

“We know that this is your money, not the government’s, and we know that you know best how to spend it. I’m proud to put this money back where it belongs and entrust hard-working Georgians with their own funds, especially as families deal with the high-cost environment that we have been in over the last several years.”

Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend and Bonus

Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) — a program designed to manage profits from the state’s oil and natural resources — will pay each eligible resident $1,702 this year. The amount includes $1,440 from the PFD itself plus a $262 one-time energy relief bonus.

Payments will be distributed on August 21 to residents who have lived in Alaska for the entire 2024 calendar year. Approximately 60,000 Alaskans receive these payments annually.
