SUN Bucks Offers Additional Summer Support
The SUN Bucks program, officially referred to as Summer EBT, targets families with school-aged children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. Households that already receive CalFresh, CalWORKS, or Medi-Cal benefits are automatically enrolled, eliminating the need for a separate application process.
Each eligible child can receive a total of $120 for the summer period, helping to offset the additional food costs incurred while school is out of session. This financial support is especially important in regions where the absence of school lunches places added pressure on family budgets. California is among the states actively distributing these funds, aiming to reduce food insecurity across vulnerable communities.
Payment Timing Based on Last Name
SUN Bucks disbursements follow a rolling schedule determined by the first letter of the recipient’s last name. Payments began in early June for families with last names starting with A through C. Disbursements continued mid- and late-June for those with last names starting with D through L.
In July, the process resumes with early-month payments for names beginning with M through Q, followed by mid-month payments for R through S. Households with last names beginning with T through Z can expect to receive their SUN Bucks by late July. This alphabet-based distribution method allows agencies to manage volume and ensures a smoother delivery process across the state.
Federal and State Coordination
While both CalFresh and SUN Bucks are federally funded through the USDA, their implementation reflects close coordination with state agencies. California’s Department of Social Services manages CalFresh, while the SUN Bucks program operates in partnership with educational and welfare departments to identify eligible children and households.
