Lottery News : Couple Nearly Misses £57 Million Win After Ticket Ripped in Half

A retired couple has revealed how they almost missed out on winning over £57 million as their lottery ticket was ripped in half.

Fred, 73, and his wife Lesley Higgans, 63, went into shock when they realised they had won the Euromillions jackpot. The pair almost missed out after the shop assistant mistakenly tore their ticket in half.

After Fred presented his ticket for scanning, the young employee informed him that it was not a winning ticket. So the employee ripped the ticket in half and threw it in the bin, as is the usual procedure for non-winning tickets.

I handed the ticket over and the young man put it through the machine, telling me it wasn't a winner,

explained Mr Higgans.

However, a receipt was produced by the terminal indicating that the ticket holder should keep it and contact the lottery organiser, Camelot.

The staff member immediately retrieved the torn ticket from the bin and returned it to Fred, unaware that it was the winning ticket, before throwing it away.

Fortunately for Fred, the winning numbers were still legible enough on the torn halves of the ticket for him to confirm that he had won.

The couple is now £52,975,367 wealthier than ever before and have a higher net worth than the actor, Idris Elba.
