ITALY. The AGCM (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato), the independent administrative authority responsible for enforcing competition and market protection rules in Italy, has fined Amazon €1.128 billion for abuse of a dominant position.
In a press release published on Thursday 9 December 2021, it accused the American giant of "harming competing logistics operators... by favouring its own logistics service to sellers active on the Amazon.it platform". It excludes the latter "from essential advantages to obtain visibility and better sales prospects" if they do not use Amazon services.
This is not the first time that Amazon has been fined for breaching competition rules or for failing to comply with EU rules on the privacy of internet users. 68.7 M€ in November 2021 imposed by the AGCM, 746 M€ in July 2021, this time by the CNPD (Luxembourg's National Commission for Data Protection), 35 M€ in 2020 by the CNIL (Commission Nationale Informatique et Liberté. France).
Amazon is increasingly establishing itself as the number one Internet retailer. In France alone, the American giant generated a turnover of €7.6 billion in 2020 (+28%), with 14,500 employees. The firm is highly criticised for the working conditions of its staff, its tax optimisation strategy (only €310 million in taxes paid in France) and its policy of hegemony.
