MEDITERRANEAN. The Cultural Council of the Union for the Mediterranean  (UfM) will continue throughout 2011 to promote a better understanding of Mediterranean people by endorsing and supporting projects that subscribe to this philosophy and by initiating on-message events.

These projects, which cover several areas of culture and the arts, will be linked by a single goal: displaying the vitality and dynamism of the initiatives supported by the Cultural Council of the UfM.

In February 2011, the UfM will stage a conference on “culture as a vehicle for solving conflicts” at the National Assembly in Paris, chaired by Renaud Muselier.

Intellectuals, experts and people from the world of culture will come together to show how culture can play a part in preventing and defusing conflict in the Mediterranean region.

Second forum on the role of culture in the economic, social and touristic development of the Mediterranean

Following on from Cairo last year, the Cultural Council will meet in Tunis in June 2011 at the second forum on the role of culture in the economic, social and touristic development of the Mediterranean, with a view to showing that the region’s cultural heritage is a unique opportunity for growth.

The events arranged by the Cultural Council include:

- Francophone Week in March, organised by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina  ;

- “Women of the Mediterranean” presentation in May on the changing status of women, prepared by pupils from secondary schools in the Mediterranean region of France;

- Three events are scheduled for June:

  •  the first ever PHOTOMED, a festival of Mediterranean photography in Sanary-sur-Mer (south-east France);
  • the 2011 Mediterranean Book Prize;
  • the Fashion and Design festival in Tunis.

"Mardis de Marigny"

Cultural Council of the Union for the Mediterranean: concrete action for an ambitious plan
These are regular events that take place three or four times a year at the Hôtel Marigny in Paris. Experts and observers get together to share and debate their views on a topic concerning culture and the Mediterranean.

The first "Mardis de Marigny" focused on:

• the role of women in the Mediterranean and the challenges they face today;

• literature and writing via the 2010 Mediterranean Book Prizes, which were awarded to Dominique Baudis, Amos Oz and Alain Vircondelet;

• cooking and food as part of the Mediterranean identity, featuring Christiane Dabdoud Nasser, author of La cuisine palestinienne classique, Nadia Hamam, author of Les mondes du couscous, Kamal Mouzawak, founder of the Souk el Tayeb market in Beirut, Eric Sapet, Michelin-starred chef at La Petite Maison de Cucuron and Gérard Vives, chairman of the Conservatoire International des Cuisines Méditerranéennes.

The forthcoming events will follow a similar pattern, focusing on strong aspects of Mediterranean culture such as artistic creation, designers and travel.
